Traditional Makeup Removal vs. New Makeup Removal Methods

Posted by Joanna on

Once upon a time, or about traditional makeup removal.

Classic makeup removal contained three steps. The first was a thorough removal of eye and eyelash makeup. Eyeshadows, liners, and mascara were removed with a cleansing milk or a dedicated eye makeup remover. The second step involved washing the skin with soap, cleansing milk, or gel. The final stage was to use a toner to restore the skin's proper pH balancebecause classic soaps or harsh gels often excessively stripped the skin of its natural oils and removed its protective layer.

What role did these cosmetics serve?

Face cleansing gel. Formerly used alone, today it is often one of the steps in a multi-stage skincare routine. It serves to cleanse the skin, although some argue that cleansing and makeup removal are two different things, and that you should always first dissolve and wipe away the layer of cosmetics and sunscreen (with wipes, oil, or milk) before moving on to properly washing the skin with soap or gel. Face cleansing soap. It used to have a bad reputation. Why? Although classic soap was great at removing dirt and sebum, it stripped the skin of too much oil and, being alkaline itself, altered the skin’s pH. That’s why using a toner to restore the skin’s acidity was essential. Milks They were used for removing makeup from the entire face (usually chosen by those with dry, mature, or sensitive skin) or for taking off eye makeup. Cleansing milk is much gentler than gels or soaps, does not disrupt the skin's pH as much, and does not cause irritation, although not everyone likes its texture. Tonic In classic makeup removal, it was an essential item. Its role was to restore balance to the skin after such aggressive cleansing and to remove any leftover makeup products. However, today a toner can serve various functions, such as moisturizing, cleansing, or tightening. The primary function of a toner remains restoring the skin's proper pH. Only when the skin has an acidic pH can it naturally protect itself against bacterial growth and maintain a balanced microbiome.

New methods of makeup removal.

Are you curious about how makeup removal has evolved over the years and what influenced these changes? On one hand a boom in eco-friendly care and minimalism, alongside an incredible development in technology, new research, new possibilities, new ingredients! Old methods used anew and methods previously completely unknown. An amazing range of possibilities. Let's see what interesting things modern times have to offer, so let's have a look at the latest makeup remover innovations!

Eyelash cleansing shampoo

This is a complete novelty. It's no wonder—such a product simply wasn't needed before, because to remove eyeliner or mascara, milk cleanser, a two-phase solution, or cleansing oil was enough. Why are these no longer suitable today? Because extended, artificial lashes have become very popular. We’re not talking about those glued-on plastic strip lashes, but the ones that stay with us for a month or longer. Oily, sticky, and overly harsh products can simply damage and loosen extended lashes. Many brands offer lash shampoos, for example: RevitaLash, Bubble is Noble Lashes. We reveal, however, that beauty bloggers report that using shampoos and foaming cleansers for babies is just as gentle and effective! They especially recommend Johnson’s Baby foam shampoo. If you don't have eyelash extensions, you can safely use other forms of makeup removal.

Hydrolate

It is actually floral water, which is produced during the distillation of plant material. You’ve probably already heard about hydrosols, but we can’t not mention them because their richness and power are significant. Above all, they are natural, relatively inexpensive, and there are so many of them that we can easily choose the right one for our skin’s needs. Plant hydrosols can be used in many ways: as a base for essences, as a base for hair tonics, instead of water to dilute masks, and so on. However, we will focus on them as a substitute for traditional tonics, because that is exactly the function of hydrolates — they tone the skin.

Sonic toothbrush

Sonic toothbrushes are relatively new, and they might just be becoming outdated. Recently, spatulas (or scrapers?) used in beauty salons for ultrasonic peeling have become available for home use. While they don't remove makeup, they use ultrasound vibrations up to 30,000 Hz. They remove impurities from pores, thereby cleansing them of excess oil, deeply embedded dirt, and dead skin cells. Probably the most well-known toothbrush is Foreo Luna. Sonic toothbrushes They are made of silicone and studded with tiny protrusions that penetrate pores, deeply cleansing them of accumulated impurities. Users of sonic brushes say their skin feels thoroughly cleansed and radiant.
