What to Remove Makeup With? Which Makeup Removers Should You Use and Which Should You Avoid?

Principles of good makeup removal.

It is worth considering what we want to achieve. Remove makeup and cleanse the skin - these are obvious goals. What else? A good makeup remover will not only remove color cosmetics and skin care products from our face, but it will not damage the hydrolipid layer of the epidermis, will not significantly change the skin's pH, will not irritate it, will not cause allergies or make it swell. The truth is that a good makeup remover, apart from effective cleansing, should simply be gentle! It is worth treating the skin gently, and we are talking about all levels here. The skin should not be stretched or rubbed, should not be treated with strong detergents or excessive exfoliation. How to achieve these goals? The choice, as always, is yours!

Gently.

If you need gentle make-up removal and your skin is dry or easily irritated, it is best to invest in a delicate foam with a good composition without the addition of soap , e.g. Makutu Bird Cherry - Horse Chestnut , which will be gentle on your complexion, thanks to the cleansing saponins that naturally occur in plants.

You can also use a milk to remove makeup. However, it is worth changing the way you use it. First of all, forget about cotton pads, which unnecessarily rub your sensitive skin. It is better to squeeze an appropriate portion of the milk into the palm of your hand, add a few drops of water and massage the damp skin of your face, as if you were applying cream. Only now, when the milk has dissolved all the cosmetics, wash them off with lukewarm water. You can help yourself with a cotton compress or a muslin cloth or a konjac sponge (if you feel like an extra dose of gentle exfoliation).

Soap? It depends on what kind!

We will mention why you shouldn't use soap to wash your face in a moment, but for now, we want to say that not all soaps are bad! If you have seborrheic, acne-prone, oily skin, soap may be for you! You just have to choose it well. We have already written about Aleppo soap in more detail HERE - it is worth reading that post, because Aleppo soap has saved the skin of many a girl. It may not look amazing, but it speeds up the healing of wounds, keeps oily skin in check, is cheap and very efficient. Just check what concentration of laurel oil is right for your facial skin and don't forget about toner!

Black soap also washes great. It comes in the form of a thick paste that foams gently during washing. The skin is so cleansed that it "squeaks", so it is also worth using a toner here and it is better to remember that soaps work well for oily skin, for dry skin they can be too astringent and drying.

Face gel, or… shampoo.

There are of course a whole bunch of face wash gels. Some are more advanced, others less so, we often show cosmetic novelties and various options available on the market on our blog. Today, however, we will be talking about face gels in a rather unusual way. If you want to focus on ultra-gentle care, you can do so and instead of investing a fortune in specialist face wash gels with uncertain compositions, buy a hair and skin wash gel for babies! Yes, you read correctly! Such gels often wash very gently and although they are not suitable for removing makeup like Kim Kardashian, they will do a great job of washing your skin in the morning, after a day when you do not wear makeup or if you wear mineral makeup. Another option is intimate hygiene gels. Internet users and bloggers recommend Rossmann gels because they are characterized by a neutral pH and very mild cleansing agents. Girls not only wash their faces with them, but also confirm that Rossmann intimate hygiene gels work great as a shampoo for thin, Slavic locks. Did you know that?

Replace tonic with floral water.

Toners are sometimes natural only in name. You can make a toner yourself at home to be sure what is in the ingredients. Washing the skin with milk, cucumber, tomato or green tea water, or water with vinegar is popular. The problem is, however, that although these solutions are nice in home care rituals, they are not a solution for every day. Unless you have time in the morning for such a complex care. Without preservatives, a home-made toner will not last very long, and you do not want to put stale products on your face! A step towards nature could be changing the drugstore toner to a hydrolate, i.e. floral or herbal water . Hydrolates are available in stores with cosmetic semi-finished products, eco cosmetics or online. Not only do they have an incredible range of properties and you can choose one that fully meets your needs, but they also smell wonderful, have a truly caring effect and are useful for diluting powder masks or as a scented body mist!

Washing gloves.

We may not be objective, but we love GLOV because using it requires no effort from us! No thinking about ingredients, no additional plastic, no scrubs, toners, gels or foams. You choose your favorite shape and material from which your GLOV is to be made , soak it in water, apply to the skin and remove the makeup! Pores are cleansed, makeup sits elegantly on the glove instead of on the face, eyelashes are in place, eyes are not irritated, and the whole thing takes about three minutes! What not to use for makeup removal?

Since you already know that make-up removal should be thorough and gentle, it is obvious that its opposite will be imprecise and too depleting to the skin, stripping it of its protective layer made of lipids and fats. There are a few things that in our (and specialists') opinion are totally unsuitable for make-up removal and should finally become a thing of the past!

Traditional soaps.

This is enemy number 1 on the make-up removal list! Not only are they too cleansing, but they also give good soaps bad PR. Which soaps should you avoid? Those with a pH much higher than our skin, around 7-8 pH. Our natural pH is 5.5 and if you use cosmetics with a higher pH, it will work aggressively on your skin, changing its reaction from acidic to alkaline, which will disturb the skin's balance and either dry it out excessively and make it sensitive, or expose it to bacteria. The skin cannot be washed out of its hydrolipid coat. It needs a lot of time to regenerate and, in addition, it can start to become oily to make up for the losses.

Aggressive detergents.

You have to be careful with the ingredients. It's good to know how to read and analyze them. People with acne-prone skin or clogged pores often have a problem with too aggressive ingredients. On the one hand, they want to cleanse their face as best as possible, on the other hand, they use such aggressive detergents that they irritate and dry out, only causing an avalanche of further problems. We don't like to dwell on the ingredients, because we offer a solution that frees us from analyzing them. Using GLOV , you don't have to kick yourself for not paying attention in chemistry class ;), but if you feel like it, we recommend an article about alcohol in cosmetics and about lousy ingredients in drugstore products for a short course in analyzing the ingredients of makeup removers . Share your worst makeup removal mistakes with us! We're dying to know and hope they'll help others avoid the disastrous consequences!
