This shopping tradition dates back to the mid-20th century in the US, when local stores and large department stores sponsored grand parades to celebrate Thanksgiving. Over time, these parades came to be seen as the kickoff to an intense shopping period that, of course, ended just before Christmas. The term “Black Friday” was first used by the Philadelphia police department to describe the chaos on the streets and in front of most stores on that day.
