5 myths on makeup removal. You should never do this.

Cosmetic brands excel at promises. Not a lot of us, however, know how to properly use the makeup removal products. According to Bożena Społowicz, the first Polish skin coach, cleansing gel should not be put on a dry cotton pad and then rubbed on face. This is one of the biggest cosmetic myths. First, you should squeeze out a suitable amount of milk, mix with a little bit of water and then massage onto your face to dissolve the makeup. Now, you can take the rest of the product off with a cotton compress or a cotton pad and wash your face with water. The skin coach recommends the same process if you clean your face with micellar water. Even though the brands claim it removes makeup without water, it leaves our skin covered with potentially irritating cleaning substances. To prevent this and protect our skin, you should definitely rinse your face with water after you remove your makeup.

The devil is in the details! If you remove your makeup with loose hair, there is a good chance you avoid the hairline. This is the area chosen by sebum, dust, sweat and cosmetic leftovers to linger on. If you have bangs, you know that the forehead is the facepart which becomes oily the fastest. While removing your makeup, we recommend you also take extra care of the hairline above your neck and your neck area in general – this part gets super tricky, especially during hot days. Probably none of us likes when the hair clings onto the face and hinders our makeup removal routine. That is why you should tie it into a ponytail or just us a headband. If you want it to be even more comfy and pleasant, use our band which will transform you into a supercute bunny! Now that the hair ia away from your face, makeup removal can be twice as pleasant and thorough.

This must be the worst mistake made by women. But we know how it works! It was a hard day and you’re so tired that you just want to go to bed. But there’s still makeup to be removed, everywhere you read that it’s so important. So you grab a cotton pad, cotton compress or a cleansing glove and you quickly rub your faceskin, stretching it every way possible. Unfortunately, this kind of behaviour can cause invisible damage. In the long run, harsh rubbing and skin stretching will cause wrinkage. You should especially look after your eyeskin because at the same time, it is usually the eyes that have the heaviest makeup on. But mascara is the least of your problems. Eyeliner, eyeshadow, eyepencils and browpencils are another thing. Eye makeup can really change your face, bring sparkle into your eyes and highlight them. What about dark circles under your eyes? Concealers, highlight bases and compact powders on top of it. No wonder the eye area is the harderst to clean. Remove eye makeup in a very gentle way. You will not only prevent premature wrinkage but also you won‘t weaken your eyelashes and eyebrows. You have eyelash extensions? So you know how delicate you should be not to damage them. So, how to properly remove eye makeup?
  1. Gently place a cotton pad (with your makeup removal cosmetic on) or a GLOV onto your eye and just let the makeup slowly dissolve.
  2. Secondly, very slowly and always in the direction of eyelash growth, move the cotton pad or GLOV down, gathering all the makeup.
  3. Repeat until you get rid of all the makeup.
Accurate eye makeup removal will prevent morning mascara circles around your eyes and will help you keep your youth for longer.

It is actually easy to „over do it“. If you have a problematic, oily skin you might be using substances that are too harsh for you. You want to get rid of the sebum and you end up destroying the hydrolipidic film and at the same time - you expose it to dehydration, dryness and imbalance. Guess, what is body’s reaction to this. Exactly! Even more sebum, which job is to protect the skin from damages. Regardless of your skin type, it’s always best to use very delicate, but at the same time effective cleaning which will not damage the hydrolipidic film and not interfere with the natural pH (which is between 3.5 and 5.5). If your skin pH is more alkaline, the following will happen if you use too strong cleaning substances – pimples, redness, skin will peel off, skin be oversensitive for cosmetics and dry. You should always remember to use dedicated makeup removal products, and then top if off with toner or hydrolate. Read product labels and analyse them to find out which substances to avoid (these might be some of the alcohols) and which are gentler (e.g. saponins). Well... a good makeup removal process is a piece of knowledge which needs to be acquired not to harm oneself. You can always also choose GLOV, which does not damage skin pH and you only need water to use it. And you can forget about reading the labels!

You already know that cleaning your makeup brushes and sponges is essential to avoid spreading bacteria all over your face. Great, but do you remember that the same should be done with your makeup removal accessories? KONJAK sponge, face brush or a cleaning glove have to be properly cleansed to perform the way they should. It’s not only about the cosmetics leftovers or dirt that covers your face in the evening, but also about the dampness. Accessories can easily become a habitat for fungus and bacteria, that is why you should wash them properly after every use. At GLOV we recommend to clean the glove after every makeup removal, and you can do it easily with the GLOV Magnet Cleanser – grey soap will also do the work. If you remove your makeup with cotton pads or cotton compresses, remember to always use clean ones. Never reuse the „almost clean“ cotton pad. Even if you think it looks clean, by the next day it will be covered with dust and invisible bacteria. We definitely prefer the „less waste“ solution, because it takes a lot of cotton pads to remove your makeup properly. What were the mistake you made before you realized they’re bad for your skin?
